Who We Are
At The Root is a publication for people exhausted by the fear, outrage, and shallow analysis dominating today’s media — and longing for something deeper: clarity instead of noise, coherence instead of confusion, pathways toward repair instead of despair.
Media that maps root causes, and illuminates rather than inflames.
For people hungry for media that actually feeds them.
Not just information. Nourishment.
Ask yourself: When you scroll the news or social media…
Do you feel more grounded, or more overwhelmed?
Do you feel more capable of acting, or anxious and frozen?
Does what you read deepen your understanding, or make your head spin?
Something is missing, and we can feel it. In the media we consume, the stories we are given, and the way the world is explained to us.
What we need is a way through the noise. A way to understand what is happening in the world without being swallowed by it. A place to turn that helps us see more clearly, feel less alone, and leave steadier than when we arrived.

A way through the noise. A way to understand what is happening in the world without being swallowed by it. A place to turn that helps us see more clearly, feel less alone, and leave steadier than when we arrived.
So much of our mainstream media ecosystem keeps us trapped in a narrow, often purposefully polarizing story: us against them… crises without deeper understanding… conflict without repair. When media is beholden to a profit-driven business model that rewards clicks, outrage, and engagement over depth, truth, and repair, fear and conflict rise to the top while wisdom, nuance, and healing are pushed to the margins.
At The Root exists as a counterbalance: a place to take a breath, slow down, widen the frame, and look beneath the surface. Here, we trace the roots of what is breaking us apart, and illuminate the stories, practices, and possibilities helping bring us back together.
Yes, we are living through real crises, in our politics, climate, communities, relationships, mental health, and institutions. But crisis is not the whole story. There are also stories of resilience, repair, transformation, courage, creativity, and success unfolding all around us.
At The Root exists to hold both: what is breaking down, and what is breaking through. That means working at the intersections most media keeps separate: the personal and the political, the psychological and the systemic, the moral and the practical, the wound and the repair.
The Interconnect: The crises of our time are not random. They are interconnected expressions of deeper forces running through our institutions, communities, and inner lives. The same disconnection driving political polarization shows up in epidemic loneliness. The same unprocessed fear that fuels authoritarianism can echo through our personal relationships and collective exhaustion. These are not separate stories. They share many of the same roots.
When we see those roots clearly, something shifts.
Confusion gives way to coherence. Isolation gives way to recognition: oh, it’s not just me. Cynicism begins to loosen its grip. And underneath it, something quieter appears: the sense that repair is not only necessary, but possible, and that it is already happening in ways that rarely make the news. We are not waiting for repair to begin. It has already begun. Our job is to spotlight what is working, and to help it spread.
To do this work well, At The Root brings together a chorus of some of today’s most thoughtful voices, people already helping us imagine and build something different, to see and share the bigger picture: writers, thinkers, journalists, practitioners, advocates, and wisdom-keepers working across psychology, systems thinking, culture, politics, spiritual and wisdom traditions, lived experience, and movements for change. This publication grows out of years of work at the intersection of peacebuilding, healing, public policy, and systems change.
This is what At The Root is here to offer:
You might read about the crisis of political polarization, and come away understanding not just what is fracturing and why, but what has always held us together, and the communities quietly proving that something different is possible.
You might explore the loneliness epidemic, and find not only its roots in a culture that dismantled shared spaces and thinned connection, but the people rebuilding them: the neighborhoods, movements, and experiments in belonging already taking shape.
You might read about school violence and youth mental health, and come away looking beyond the usual debates to the roots: trauma, isolation, emotional dysregulation, despair. You begin to see why social-emotional learning, mindfulness, restorative practices, and real support may prevent more harm than another layer of security ever could.
You might look at democratic erosion, climate anxiety, or the weight of collective exhaustion, and come away with more than despair: a clearer sense of what is happening, why old patterns keep repeating, and where new possibilities are beginning to emerge.
We cover a wide range — from democracy and political culture to mental health, relationships, education, climate, spirituality, and the inner life — and the deeper forces that interconnect them.
At The Root is not just a publication to read. It is a place to think, feel, and show up differently — to become someone who sees more clearly what this moment is asking of us, and does something with that awareness. This is not passive media.
This is a place to belong to — deeper seeing in service of a more beautiful world that wants to rise up. From the root.

We welcome submissions from writers, artists, activists, and practitioners who sense that the story our world needs is deeper than the one being told.
We’re especially drawn to:
Essays and reflections that bring together insight, emotion, and lived experience.
Narrated or filmed pieces that let voices and stories be felt as well as understood.
Conversations and interviews that reveal wisdom in dialogue.
Poems, prayers, and creative works that invite stillness, presence, or awe.
Field reports and practice notes from peacebuilders, organizers, or healers applying transformational work in real-world settings.
Guides and frameworks that support transformative activism—approaches that weave inner work, relational intelligence, and systemic change.
Visual and multimedia submissions that express our interconnected story through image, sound, or movement.
If your work helps us see our shared humanity more clearly—or helps bridge inner healing with outer change—it belongs here.
